![]() ![]() It comes down to the fact that if there was only MLG that weekend it would have Starcraft. Redbull is hosting an event the same weekend. The only thing that this does is it shows the main reason that Starcraft is not going to be at MLG Columbus. Honestly the only thing that this does is it destroys a couple of excuses for MLG to remove Starcraft from it's roster. A lot of community members cited the payment requirement as an excuse for MLG to drop Starcraft 2 from there events. iNcontrol said that he asked the community manager if Blizzard requires a fee in order to run a tournament. I honestly have no idea how you can have spent so much time making so many comments in this thread and still not stop for a second to learn some simple economic lessons that are instilled in most elementary school math classes. We have no idea knowing if the event would end up segregating viewers and player attendance and it'd be huge risk for MLG to wanna fight them.Īnd it becomes a bigger cost and problem for MLG when you actually do factor in their costs of production and the fact that in reality income is not directly proportional to stream views. They might be throwing an event with a bigger prize pool, they might be offering free travel and high seeds for top invite players, they might have already secured top casters, and/or a whole bunch of other stuff that will bring views to Redbull and not MLG. So even if we still wanna take the super simplistic approach that stream views = income and even if we wanna ignore profit by ignoring costs and just looking at income, MLG will still might not have that much income from throwing an event. Throwing SC2 with an open bracket, paying casters and background workers (audio, lighting, stream tech, broadcast workers, admins/refs, etc.), and more probably costs MLG more than for other games.Īnd that doesn't even address the real reason that MLG isn't holding an event: Redbull is hosting an event that weekend. You might wanna become more familiar with the term "profit".Įven if we could simplify the finances to the point where stream numbers = income, you've still not accounted for the costs of production at all. If the tournament organizer chooses not to partner with Riot, and turns down the support, then obviously there would be no contract in place, so there'd be no stipulation concerning genre exclusivity, LoL + other games in the genre could be at the same event. If a tournament organization chooses to accept this financial and technical support, one of the rules in the contract is that there can't be another MOBA/ARTS game at the event. They provide technical support for the game, and assist with the prize pool and certain expenses. Riot sponsors the events because they want to make their game (LoL) look as good as possible. LoL is huge, and has been drawing increasingly larger crowds, so it makes sense to go with LoL when you have limited space at events. As far as I know there are two possible explanations: IMO it actually made business sense, and wasn't some terrible, evil thing, if it ever did exist. What iSanddbox is talking about is Riot's tournament exclusivity. It was an incredibly stupid idea on Riot's part, and everyone told them how stupid it was, so luckily they never even started doing that. There was a leak by team owners saying Riot planned on not letting them have teams in other games of the genre. No, that was exclusivity of organizations such as Dignitas, EG, etc, who were expecting to have LoL teams in the LCS. r/wow /r/diablo /r/hearthstone /r/heroesofthestorm /r/overwatch Same- and similar-topic submissions that exceed 4 per top 25 Promotional submissions that exceed "2 per 1 per 1"ĭuplicate results posts for the same individual match will be removed.
